The Serenity Coffeehouse at Salem Covenant Church presents organist Ghilyana Dordzhieva and the Ensemble Grunya Singers (Voice Instructor: Evgeniy Bagrintsev; Artistic Director, Ghilyana Dordzhieva, PhD). The Boston-based ensemble Grunya performs traditional songs from different regions of Russia, as well as from Ukraine and Belarus. Grunya was formed in 2020, the name of the ensemble is once a popular Slavic female name, as well as the character of the group’s favorite round dance song.
The members of the ensemble are not professional singers; among them are people of different occupations, backgrounds, and ages. Through singing, Grunya develops a language environment for the families, supports language skills for the children, learns the culture and history of the Slavic peoples, and practices a joyful way of celebrating holidays and important life events. Singing together for Grunya is an indispensable form of communication, development, and pleasure.
The program will include two chorale preludes from J.S. Bach’s Orgelbüchlein: Herr Jesu Christ, dich zu uns wend (Lord Jesus Christ, Turn Unto Us) BWV 632, and
Ich ruf’ zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ (I Call to You, Lord Jesus Christ) BWV 639.
